This spring break we decided to take on a few home improvement projects around the house. I am type A and always have to have something planned, something productive on the agenda, something to feel accomplished and satisfied. Ted is the opposite: he'd rather sit in his "nothing box" and play video games all day long. So we compromised. We got the best of both worlds and took half of break to WORK and half of break to PLAY.
Well, with small children, any DIY project is like taking one step forward and two steps back... But we got a few wonderful things accomplished, and we will not be planning anything H/I-wise in the near future...
PROJECT #1
Downstairs Half-BATH
BEFORE
DURING
$10 for a gallon of "Glowing Flame" paint (rusty paprika color)
First we had to strip all the blue wallpaper. Luckily we had a steamer. It was still tough. The stuff's been on there nearly 10 years now! Then we found out the wallpaper was hiding some stuff...like shortcuts that the builder took in getting this "model home" up quickly. There was a baseball sized hole behind the mirror in the drywall, disguised by wallpaper. There was a putty-repaired shoddy wall patch all behind the paper. Then when we started painting we realized (a) we didn't get all the paste off and (b) there was never any primer on the walls - just straght-up drywall....
But it all turned out okay - we found ways to "Shortcut" ourselves...
AFTER
PROJECT #2
Storm Door on Front Porch
This project was not without its own challenges ^^. Irregular door frame made for a tough fit and then the suspension on auto-close was defective - still have to exchange it out.
PROJECT #3
Square Foot Garden Box
Ted set up the plot for me and I planted all the veggies.
From back Left to Right - Green Beans, Green Pepper, Tomato
Snap Peas, Romaine Lettuce, Squash, Cucumber
Not Pictured: Two window boxes that contain LemonThyme, Basil, Mint, and Cherry Tomatoes.
What a great way to spend 3 full days of Spring Break!
At least now we have Wed-Sun
to relax and enjoy the pollen weather!
